SCHOOL VISITS
PRESENTATION FOR HASTY PUDDING, JOHNNYCAKES, AND OTHER GOOD STUFF: COOKING IN COLONIAL AMERICA:
I arrive at your school dressed as a colonial woman. My presentation is an hour long and I prefer smaller groups because I do a hands-on talk. Can present to three to four groups in a day. Here is what I do:
A cooking demo: Cook small johnnycakes on an electric skillet while talking about how the American colonists found and prepared food in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. I have students pass around a jar of cream to make homemade butter. Serve johnnycakes to students and teachers with apple butter and the freshly made butter.
Slide show: Show slides on how I wrote and researched book. Many are colorful pictures of my trip to Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.
Closing of program: Show what a manuscript and galley looks like before it becomes a book. I am open to questions throughout my presentation and will answer any put to me at the end as well.
PRESENTATION FOR TOOTHWORMS AND SPIDER JUICE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF DENTISTRY:
I arrive at your school dressed in normal, present-day clothing (no mad dentist outfit). My presentation is an hour long and I prefer to talk to small groups not assemblies as I bring dental props, etc. I can do three to four sessions in a day. Here is what I do:
Discuss and read from my book about the history of dentistry with all its gross and sometimes amusing facts.
Show students stone models of teeth; modern dental appliances such as dentures and partials; restorations such as crowns and bridges. Open to questions during program.
Slide show: How I researched book, prints of ancient and Middle Age dentistry, and how a modern dental office works.
PRESENTATION FOR SKILLET BREAD, SOURDOUGH, AND VINEGAR PIE: COOKING IN PIONEER DAYS:

I
arrive at your school dressed as a pioneer woman. My presentation is an hour
long and I prefer smaller groups because I do a hands-on talk. Can present to
three to four groups in a day. Here is what I do:
A
cooking demo: Cook
small sourdough pancakes on an electric skillet while talking about how the
pioneers on the Oregon Trail, forty-niners at the mines, and the early cowboys
on the trail prepared food in the nineteenth century under harsh environments
with meager supplies. I have students pass around a jar of cream to make butter.
I also have them take a whiff of my sourdough starter.
Slide
show: After
passing around the pancakes served with the homemade butter and brown sugar, I
will show slides on how I researched and wrote this book.
Closing of program: Show what a manuscript and galley looks like before it becomes a book. I am open to questions throughout my presentation and at the end as well.
